Gas vs Diesel Fleet Maintenance: What Business Owners Should Know
Gas vs diesel fleet maintenance for Lake County businesses — where cost, intervals and downtime really differ, and why a mixed fleet needs one shop.

The short answer
Gas fleet vehicles cost less per service but need attention more often. Diesel work trucks go longer between oil services but add fuel filtration, water separators, emissions hardware and turbochargers, which raises the cost of neglect. A mixed fleet should be grouped by fuel and duty cycle, not put on one shared schedule.
The short version
Gas fleet vehicles are cheaper per service and need attention more often. Diesel work trucks go longer between oil services but carry extra systems — fuel filtration, water separators, emissions hardware, turbochargers — that cost more when they are neglected.
Where they differ
**Oil service.** Gas vans typically run shorter oil intervals with cheaper parts. Diesels hold more oil, cost more per change and usually go further between them.
**Fuel system.** Diesel fuel filters and water separators are a scheduled item, not an if-needed item. Water in diesel fuel is one of the most expensive avoidable failures in a work fleet.
**Emissions systems.** Modern diesels have DPF and related hardware that dislikes constant short trips and long idling — exactly the duty cycle of many work trucks. Planning longer runs, or accepting more frequent attention, is part of owning them.
**Brakes and suspension.** A loaded diesel pickup is heavier and tows more, so brakes, bushings and driveline components see more load per mile.
**Downtime cost.** Diesel parts and labor are usually higher, so a diesel breakdown tends to hurt the schedule more than a gas one.
What this means for a mixed fleet
Most local contractors run both. The mistake is treating the fleet as one schedule. Group vehicles by fuel and duty cycle, then set intervals per group rather than per company.
The second mistake is splitting the fleet across two shops — a gas shop and a diesel shop. That fragments the maintenance history, and history is what tells you which vehicle keeps repeating an issue.
How we handle it at Total Performance Tuning
Gas and diesel are handled in the same building, by the same people, with an in-house dyno for the diesel tuning side. That keeps one record per vehicle and one conversation for the whole fleet. Call 352 973 5565 or start a fleet maintenance plan.
Fleet service across Lake County

HVAC and plumbing vans, contractor pickups, landscaping trailers, pool and pest service vehicles, delivery vans and mixed gas and diesel fleets are all handled in the same building, so one vehicle history follows the truck instead of being split across two shops.
What that looks like in practice: scheduled maintenance planned around your work week, written estimates before anything is repaired, findings sorted into what needs attention now, what to plan for and what to keep watching, and an in-house dyno for the diesel side. Common questions
- Is diesel cheaper to maintain than gas?
- Not per visit. Diesels usually go further between oil services but carry more expensive parts and extra systems, so planned maintenance matters more, not less.
- Can one shop handle both?
- Yes. Total Performance Tuning services gas and diesel work vehicles in the same building, so a mixed fleet keeps one maintenance history.
- Do short trips hurt diesel work trucks?
- They can. Constant short runs and long idling are hard on modern diesel emissions systems, which is worth planning around.
